Metanol: Cambios de fase y estructurales con las variaciones de temperatura

Abstract

El metanol se encuentra en diferentes contextos del Sistema Solar como objetos transneptunianos (TNOs) o cometas. También se ha detectado en el medio interestelar (ISM). El metanol es la más sencilla de las denominadas moléculas orgánicas complejas (COMs). Estas moléculas son de interés por su relación con moléculas prebióticas. Conocer sus características físicas y cómo estas evolucionan frente a variaciones de temperatura, ayuda a comprender y prever su comportamiento y posible interacción con otras moléculas presentes en los hielos. También permiten estudiar la relación ente las fases sólida y gaseosa, en los ambientes en los que está presente. Se ha determinado la densidad promedio y el índice de refracción a diferentes temperaturas de depósito (20-130 K). Observando que la densidad y el índice aumentan con la temperatura de depósito, hasta un máximo a 100 K. Los incrementos de densidad con la temperatura permiten relacionarlos con cambios estructurales como diferencias en densidades intrínsecas, como máxima compactación de hielo amorfo, o bien la diferentes fases cristalinas que presenta el hielo formado en condiciones de alto vacío. Para poder seguir dichas variaciones, así como determinar las condiciones iniciales se ha utilizado Interferometría láser, espectroscopía de masas y gravimetría con una micro-balanza de cuarzo que actuaba de porta-muestras.
