Gómez de la Serna en El Incongruente (1922) aprovecha una armazón episódica y fragmentaria para reivindicar un vitalismo al margen de convenciones sociales, inserto en una concepción, tan fatalista como liberadora, del mundo como sujeto al azar y el absurdo. Gustavo, el protagonista de la novela, vive las más inesperadas y absurdas aventuras en un Madrid inverosímil y casi fantástico. Joven, desocupado, culto, sofisticado y sin preocupaciones económicas, Gustavo acepta la incongruencia que le acecha cada día para lanzarle, en la mayor parte de los casos, a aventuras eróticas en las cuales sortea la posibilidad temida del matrimonio.
