+150 estrellas OB en Sextans A, una galaxia con solo 1/10 Zsolar

Abstract

Las estrellas masivas muy pobres en metales son los mejores análogos de las primeras generaciones de estrellas de nuestro Universo. Sin embargo, la distancia que nos separa de las galaxias que las albergan nos ha impedido hasta ahora realizar estudios espectroscópicos extensos de estos objetos. Tras cinco campañas de observación en el Gran Telescopio de Canarias, hemos construido un catálogo espectroscópico de más de 150 estrellas OB en la galaxia del Grupo Local Sextans A (1/10 Z⨀). Este es el catálogo más extenso de estrellas masivas con metalicidades menores que la Pequeña Nube de Magallanes. En esta muestra, encontramos estrellas OB aisladas en regiones de baja densidad de HI, desafiando las teorías actuales de formación estelar. Además, identificamos fuentes candidatas a experimentar evolución química homogénea o a contener una “stripped star”. Ambos caminos evolutivos nunca han sido detectados a muy baja metalicidad y su confirmación observacional tendría grandes implicaciones en las teorías de evolución estelar y en la interpretación de las observaciones de galaxias a alto-z.
