Abstract

The backbone of this volume is the question of the values that govern the selection of the Nobel Prize for Literature laureates and that, from the point of view of the economics of culture (the word economics being taken in its literal as well as its figurative sense), underpin the legitimacy of the Nobel Prize for Literature as an institution that claims to define orders and hierarchies. These values seem to be intimately linked to those that structure a Europeanist ideal, which, although it has gradually lost its influence over the decades, remains very much alive today in official discourse as well as in the media rumors that surround the awarding of the prize each year.
