Первые сведения о водорослях в почве появились в конце 19 века. В 1907 г. была опубликована статья Ф. Фриха об участии водорослей в почвенных процессах. Систематическое изучение водорослей на территории бывшего СССР было начато М. М. Голлербахом в 30-х годах. С тех пор было опубликовано множество аналитических статей и монографий.
