The main embankment dam elements to be included during the design process are fixing the dam height, dam crest, dam zooming, provision of necessary filter materials for both filtering and discharging purposes, and analyzing the slope stability of both upstream and downstream slopes under different loading conditions. The various design elements indicated above can be done by following scientific and practically accepted design principles available in various works of literature and guidelines. Slopes for both upstream and downstream of an embankment dam can be adapted from different sources by considering the fill material, dam height, and type of embankment dam. But this approach may lead to either uneconomical or unsafe structures, and hence to avoid this problem it is necessary to carry out slope stability analysis for dams.
