Toll-like receptors (TLRs) are pattern recognition receptors responsible for the recognition of pathogen-associated molecular patterns of viruses, fungi, bacteria and parasites, thus being the first line of defense in the immune system. Excessive activation of TLR8 leads to inflammation and autoimmune diseases, prompting the requirement for the discovery of selective TLR8 modulators.
