ABSTRACT The Ciencia Anti Fake News project, by a group of scientists at the National Scientific and Technical Research Council (CONICET) and other collaborators from different institutions in Argentina, represents an early and consistent response to offer trustworthy information to citizens, considering their needs during the COVID-19 pandemic, within a context of fake news proliferation in new and traditional media. Although its actions go beyond this work, this self-managed project is emblematic of the communicational efforts linked to science fact-checking. This article represents a preliminary analysis on the origins of the idea, its goals, initial organization, participants, workflow, and institutional relationships, focusing on issues related to treatments and vaccines for COVID-19, from the perspective of health risk communication.
