Cyrtocapsus fiuzai Henry, new species

Abstract

Cyrtocapsus fiuzai Henry, new species http://zoobank.org:act: 18AB2235-9322-4715-BD6F-5D6808FE0243 (Figs. 25, 26, 71, 72) Diagnosis. This species (Figs. 25, 26) is distinguished by the brownish-orange embolium, apical area of the corium, outer two thirds of the cuneus, and posterior area of the pronotal disc; the uniformly yellowish-white antenna and legs, including the coxae; and the broad, apically rounded right paramere (Fig. 72). Cyrtocapus fiuzai is similar to C. intermedius (Fig. 34) in sharing the brownish-orange embolium and apical areas of the corium and pronotum, and the pale legs. Cyrtocapsus intermedius differs from C. fiuzai by the uniformly dark brown pronotum (or sometimes with the basal margin paler brown); the apically red or dark reddish-brown apex of the antennal segment II (rather than uniformly yellowish white); and the distinctly more elongate right paramere (Fig. 81). Description. Male (Fig. 25) (n = 1, plus holotype measurements in parentheses): Length to apex of membrane 3.68 mm (3.78 mm), length to base of cuneus 2.46 mm (2.62 mm), widest width across hemelytra 1.46 mm (1.47 mm). Head: Width 0.80 mm (0.83 mm), interocular width 0.38 mm (0.40 mm). Labium: Length 0.83 mm (0.88 mm). Antenna: Segment I length 0.45 mm (0.45 mm); II, 0.72 mm (0.74 mm); III and IV shriveled (shriveled). Pronotum: Median length 0.93 mm (0.96 mm), basal width 1.26 mm (1.28 mm). Coloration: Head yellowish brown to brownish orange, frons and clypeus fuscous, sides sometimes darker brown; eyes dark reddish brown. Labium pale yellowish brown. Antennal segments I and II pale yellowish brown; segments III and IV dark brown. Pronotum black, broadly brownish orange across posterior margin of disc. Scutellum black. Hemelyron with clavus and basal two thirds of corium fuscous to black; embolium and apical thirds of corium brownish orange; cuneus brownish orange except for fuscous inner angle; membrane clear or translucent, veins and inner margins inside areole fuscous. Ventral surface of thorax fuscous to black; abdomen dark brown, accented with fuscous. Legs, including coxae, pale yellowish white; tarsomere III and claws pale brown. Texture and vestiture: Head weakly shiny, rugose, with silvery sericeous setae along median line, inner margins of eyes, and transversely across frons. Pronotum weakly shiny, disc coarsely punctate, punctures finer on collar and calli; calli weakly rounded, divided by a deep pit; anterior area across collar and calli with dense, silvery, sericeous setae, disc with more slender, scattered, silvery setae. Hemelytron dull, impunctate, thickly set with silvery, sericeous setae. Male genitalia: Left paramere (Fig. 71) elongate, weakly C-shaped, broad through middle, tapering to a hook apically. Right paramere (Fig. 72) narrow at base, broadly rectangular, and apically truncate. Female (Figs. 26) (n = 4): Length to apex of membrane 3.71–3.81 mm, length to base of cuneus 2.50–2.62 mm, widest width across hemelytra 1.40–1.60 mm. Head: Width 0.80–0.85 mm, interocular width 0.40–0.43 mm. Labium: Length 0.80–0.88 mm. Antenna: Segment I length 0.42–0.48 mm; II, 0.67–0.70 mm; III (n = 2), 0.50–0.56 mm; IV missing or shriveled. Pronotum: Median length 0.88–0.93 mm, basal width 1.23–1.31 mm. Etymology. I name this species in honor of my good friend and colleague, Dr. Paulo Sergio Fiuza Ferreira (emeritus professor, Federal University of Viçosa, Minas Gerais, Brazil), who kindly hosted me on several memorable and productive field trips to Minas Gerais. Host. Unknown. Distribution. Minas Gerais, Pernambuco, and Santa Catarina states, Brazil. Type material. Holotype ♂: BRAZIL: Minas Gerais: Corrego da Paraiso (Mata do Prefeitura), 10 March 1993, T.J. Henry (MNRJ). Paratypes: Minas Gerais: 1 ♂, 1 ♀ (two points on one pin), Brazil, Minas Gerais, Viçosa, Sept. 1943, Carvalho (BMNH); 3 ♀♀, same data as for holotype (USNM). Pernambuco: 2 ♂♂, 5 ♀♀, Aç [ude] Quixabá, Br., M. Schubart, 1973 (1 ♂, 2 ♀♀, AMNH; 1 ♂, 3 ♀♀ [four points on one pin], USNM). Santa Catarina: 2 ♀♀, Brazil, Santa Catarina, Nova Teutonia, Brazil, 29 June 1945, F. Plaumann (USNM).
