RESUMO: Este artigo apresenta elementos em favor das seguintes teses: (1) o positivismo científico brasileiro do século XIX foi intelectualmente pobre e levou a nossa matemática a ficar aquém do conhecimento da época; (2) nunca existiu neopositivismo no Brasil. A razão para a pobreza filosófica do país foi a ausência de uma vida acadêmica mais ampla, pois o Brasil não teve universidades, até 1920. SCIENTIFIC POSITIVISM AND NEOPOSITIVISM IN BRAZIL Abstract: This article produces elements to sustain the following theses: (1) 19% Century Brazilian scientific positivism was intellectually poor and caused especially our mathematics to lag behind the knowledge of the time; (2) there was never such a thing as a neopositivism in Brazil. The reason for Brazil's philosophical poverty was the inexistence of a comprehensive academic life, since Brazil had no universities until 1920.
