Gebruik van hybride zaden ter verbetering van de aardappelproductie

Abstract

Probleem: Veredeling en vermeerdering van aardappel via pootgoed zijn trage processen in de conventionele veredeling (zie figuur 1.A). Als gevolg van de complexe genetica, de moeilijkheid om specifieke locaties aan te wijzen en de onvoorspelbaarheid van de veredeling, is er een gebrek aan genetische vooruitgang in aardappelopbrengst. De conventionele aardappelveredeling is afhankelijk van volumineus pootgoed. Dit is in de praktijk niet efficiënt, en het maakt het onmogelijk om schoon uitgangmateriaal te produceren. Oplossing: Hybride veredeling (Figuur 1.B) van diploïde aardappel is een oplossing om sneller te veredelen en schoon uitgangsmateriaal te verkrijgen. Eenvoudigere genetica maakt het mogelijk om gunstige eigenschappen sneller te combineren door veredeling. Specifieke gewenste eigenschappen, zoals resistentie tegen Phytophthora, kunnen relatief snel worden ingebracht door natuurlijke kruising. Vermenigvuldiging via echt zaad maakt het mogelijk om binnen twee jaar miljoenen ziektevrije zaden te produceren.
