Abstract

Palavras-chave: Brasil Colônia - Brasil português - Educação Química - Século XIX A HISTORY OF BRAZILIAN CHEMICAL EDUCATION: ABOUT ITS BEGINNINGS TOLD FROM THE CONQUERORS ABSTRACT: This essay describes the early days of Brazilian education, searching for the beginning of chemical education in Brazil. There are three historical documents - one Portuguese, one French and one Brazilian, which are decisive to acknowledge the existence and understand the nature of Chemistry teaching in Brazil at the time. (i)The Rules of philosophic Curse stated in the Statutes of Coimbra University (1772); (ii) About a Way of Teaching Chemistry (wrote by Lavoisier between 1790 and 1793) and (iii) the Guidelines to the Chair of Chemistry of Bahia by Conde da Barca (1817). The last one is the object of this study. In 1804, Antônio de Araújo e Azevedo — the Conde da Barca — was Portuguese Minister of Foreign Affairs and of War. He was then in favor of moving the Portuguese Court to Rio de Janeiro. In Brazil he wrote scientific works while he undertook the responsibility for every Ministry. He founded the Royal Print and the Arts Gallery in 1815. He can be considered one of the pioneers of Chemical Education in Brazil. Keywords: Colonial Brazil - Brazil under Portuguese Government - Chemical Education - Nineteenth Century
