CRITIQUE OF THE SAD REASON Abstract: This short essay discusses the specific character of Pascal’s philosophy of religion as being a critique of the sadness of reason. The conclusion, after analyzing some of its main topics (theology of contingent grace, equivocity of language, disjunction of the three cosmological orders, pragmatic geometry and physics, failure of mathematical proof), is that the consistency of reason is negative: its legitimacy is function of its capacity to organize a critical theological propaedeutics. Keywords: insufficiency, infinite, nothingness, contingency, equivocity, reason, sadness.
