Abstract

Entrevista concedida por Eliane Azevêdo a Nadir Ferrari. Na manhã de um verão excepcionalmente quente, o de 2003, com o azul da Baía de Todos os Santos como cenário, no café do Hotel Sol Victoria Marina, na cidade do Salvador, Bahia, Eliane Elisa de Souza Azevêdo concedeu esta entrevista. A história dessa entrevista começa em uma das reuniões anuais da Sociedade Brasileira de Genética (Águas de Lindóia, SP), quando esta entrevistadora despertou para o fato de que a história da genética humana no Brasil contada até então, inclusive por ela, não incluía o grupo da Bahia como pioneiro, ao lado dos de Newton Freire-Maia, no Paraná; Oswaldo Frota-Pessoa, em São Paulo, e Francisco Mauro Salzano, no Rio Grande do Sul. As conversas com Eliane, em Águas de Lindóia, motivaram-na a ir até Salvador e descobrir estudos sobre hereditariedade, publicados já no final do século XIX, e artigos envolvendo genética clássica nas décadas de 1920 e de 1940, leitura excitante para uma pesquisadora interessada na história da genética brasileira. O que os leitores de Episteme vão ler a seguir é, assim, resultado de um diálogo que se iniciou com um bate-papo informal, evoluiu para uma entrevista gravada em áudio e continuou por via eletrônica. Eliane, modestamente, não se considera pioneira como geneticista baiana e lembra que antes dela houve Jessé Accioly e Cora de Moura Pedreira. Entretanto, ela foi a primeira a dedicar-se inteiramente ao ensino e à pesquisa em genética na Bahia e a conseguir renome nacional e internacional. Eliane atua hoje na Universidade Federal da Bahia (UFBA), no ensino de pós-graduação, e na Universidade Estadual de Feira de Santana (UEFS). Sua produção científica inclui cerca de 130 artigos em periódicos conceituados na área e vários livros publicados sobre genética médica e clínica, aconselhamento genético e, mais recentemente, bioética.
