Effect of Azotobacter on fixed nitrogen

Abstract

Se ha medido la tasa de absorción de nitrito y nitrato por A. vinelandii; al mismo tiempo, se ha determinado la tasa de formación y desaparición de amoníaco (en el caso del nitrito) y de nitrito y amoníaco (en el caso del nitrato). Los resultados indican que cuando se suministra nitrito, el amoníaco se forma casi a la misma velocidad que el nitrito desaparece; de manera similar, la velocidad de aparición del nitrito, y posteriormente del amoníaco, coincide estrechamente con la velocidad a la que el nitrato desaparece del medio. Los resultados se discuten en relación con el metabolismo de las bacterias.

Le taux d'absorption de nitrite et de nitrate par A. vinelandii a été mesuré ; en même temps, le taux de formation et de disparition de l'ammoniac (dans le cas du nitrite) et du nitrite et de l'ammoniac (dans le cas du nitrate) ont été déterminés. Les résultats indiquent que lorsque le nitrite est fourni, l'ammoniac se forme presque à la même vitesse que le nitrite disparaît ; de même, la vitesse d'apparition du nitrite, et ensuite de l'ammoniac, coïncide étroitement avec la vitesse à laquelle le nitrate disparaît du milieu. Les résultats sont discutés en relation avec le métabolisme des bactéries.

The rate of uptake of nitrite and nitrate by A. vinelandii has been measured; at the same time, the rate of formation and disappearance of ammonia (in the case of nitrite) and of both nitrite and ammonia (in the case of nitrate) have been determined. The results indicate that when nitrite is supplied ammonia is formed at almost the same rate as the nitrite disappears; similarly, the rate of appearance of nitrite, and subsequently of ammonia, coincides closely with the rate at which the nitrate disappears from the medium. The results are discussed in relation to the metabolism of the bacteria.
