RESUMO: Este trabalho apresenta uma visão condensada dos três temas que seguem: 1. Positivismo: uma revolução filosófica, científica e religiosa; 2. A Filosofia da História segundo Comte; 3. Um breve exame da vida, época e obra de Augusto Comte. Serão enfatizados os seguintes aspectos da história do Positivismo no Brasil: 4. A influência das idéias de Comte no pensamento brasileiro através do pensamento e ensino de alguns de seus discípulos diretos, como Nísia Floresta e Justiniano Gomes; 5. O Positivismo Religioso no Brasil: o trabalho de Miguel Lemos e de Teixeira Mendes, e o Templo da Humanidade no Rio de Janeiro. 6. Luiz Pereira Barreto e o Positivismo Científico em São Paulo. 7. Positivismo no Rio Grande do Sul: suas características, o pensamento político de Júlio de Castilho e de seus sucessores, a Capela Positivista e a “Escola de Engenharia”. THE INFLUENCE OF AUGUSTE COMTE ON THE BRAZILIAN WAY OF THINKING Abstract: This paper presents a short view of the following three themes: 1. Positivism: a philosophical, scientific, and religious revolution; 2. The Philosophy of History according to Comte; 3. A brief examination of life and works of Auguste Comte, and his historical context. There will be an emphasis on the history of Positivism in Brazil focusing on: 4. The influence of Comte’s ideas on the Brazilian way of thinking, through the work of some of Comte’s direct disciples, like Nísia Floresta and Justiniano Gomes; 5. The Religious Positivism in Brazil: the work of Miguel Lemos and Teixeira Mendes, and the Temple of Mankind in Rio de Janeiro; 6. Luiz Pereira Barreto and the Scientific Positivism in São Paulo; 7. Positivism in Rio Grande do Sul: its characteristics, the political thought of Julio de Castilhos and his followers, the Positivistic Chapel, and the “School of Engineering”.
