EXPERIMENTATION AND DISCOVERY: SOME REMARKS FROM THE EPISTEMOLOGY OF EXPERIMENTATION Abstract: Experimentation and scientific discovery are topics that have characterized the discussion in the Philosophy of Science. However, there is not much of a reflection about the link between these two faces of the scientific activity. The purpose of this paper is to make some remarks about the relationships between discovery and experimentation, from the consideration of the several faces of experimentation and their role in science. The framework of this work will be the epistemology of experimentation. The diversity of works and philosophical traditions grouped under the expression ‘epistemology of experimentation’ will be taken into account The following experimentation topics will be develop: thought experiments, experiments to test theories and experiments to measure, crucial experiments, repeatable and repeated experiments, the trilogy experiments, theories and instruments. Keywords: Discovery; Experimentation; Contexts; Heuristics; Philosophy of Science
