Neutralidad Observacional y Carga Teórica

Neutralidad Observacional y Carga Teórica

Abstract

OBSERVATIONAL NEUTRALITY AND THE THEORY-LADEN THESIS Abstract: The theory-laden thesis and the view of incommensurability of scientific theories had been used like a battle horse by the antirealist conceptions. The question about the role played by observation as a criterion for choosing between competing scientific theories and thus the rejection of the theory/ observation distinction provided grounds for the development of prevailing relativistic positions. As long as relativism can be considered as a form of antirealism, the defense of realism appears as a very legitimate alternative. That is Jerry Fodor's position and, from this perspective, he asserts that it is necessary to accept any theory-observation distinction in order to protect realism from the threat of relativism of the kind which is defended by Kuhn. In this paper, 1 agree with the general thesis of Fodor’s account, namely, that there is a theory /observation distinction that could favor the realistic view. I formulate some critical objections to certain arguments that Fodor defends for building his conception. Finally, I conclude by indicating an alternative perspective of analysis which changes the debate parameters and opens, in my opinion, new lines of investigation. Keywords: Observation: Theory-Laden Thesis; Incommensurability: Modular Theory, Semantic Holism.
