Silicic acid, prepared by passing sodium silicate solution through H-ion exchange resin, undergoes ion-densation polymerisation and the reaction is of the third order. The changes in the optical properties, via., dissymmetry, depolarisation, and tubidity, during polymerisation have been studied by measuring the intensity of scattered light at different angles. The shape of the particles has been found to be spherical. The average molecular weight of the particles at different stages of polymerisation has been determined from measurement of light scattering and viscosity.
