RESUMO: O ano de 2002 assinala os 500 anos do nascimento do maior matemático português de todos os tempos: Pedro Nunes. Este artigo resgata alguns dados mais relevantes da sua vida pessoal e da sua obra, sem ter, contudo, a pretensão de constituir-se em uma rigorosa biografia do mesmo. A intenção aqui é prestar-lhe uma homenagem de modo diverso, isto é, tão somente a de pinçar um precioso fragmento contido na sua Algebra no qual Pedro Nunes antecipa brilhantemente uma das questões filosóficas mais importantes na Educação Matemática atual, qual seja: o debate sobre os contextos da descoberta e da justificativa na produção matemática e as suas decorrências no ensino e na aprendizagem. A seqüência do presente texto é, então, dedicada inteiramente a focalizar esta questão epistemológica e educacional. ON THE CONTEXT OF DISCOVERY AND THE CONTEXT OF JUSTIFICATION IN THE PEDRO NUNES’ ALGEBRA Abstract: The year of 2002 signalizes the five centuries of Pedro Nunes’ birth: the most important Portuguese mathematician in this long time. This paper enhances some of the most relevant data of his personal life and intellectual attainments without, nevertheless, intending to constitute a rigorous biography about him. The purpose is to praise that prolific thinker in a different way, i.e. by only focusing on a precious fragment contained in his Algebra where Pedro Nunes brilliantly anticipates one of the most important philosophical issues of the current Mathematics Education field, namely, the debate concerning discovery and justification contexts in Mathematics production as well as their consequences to teaching and learning.
