O colecionismo e a sobrevivência do Homo sapiens

Abstract

Collectionism and the survival of the Homo sapiens Abstract: Although Homo sapiens is one of a myriad of animal species it differs from all others by its outstanding brain size and structure. Such a physical apparatus has enabled this species to exercise an amazing curiosity with unparalleled memory and the capacity to instigate practical insight. This remarkable anatomical-physiological complex has evolved within the context of ecosystems at regional scales for hundreds of generations, and in the past 10-15 generations (200-300 years), has become intertwined with profound changes at every level of the ecological hierarchy, from landscapes and ecosystems to the level of the whole biosphere. The ways in which the many populations of Homo sapiens have spread and occupied the earth, evolving new genetic and cultural specializations in isolation and by mixing, has generated the complex extant diversity profile of this species. The study of this particular bio-cultural history is portrayed by artifacts and specimens of all sorts housed in thousands of Museums, Academies and Libraries and which witness to aspects of the species survival and particularly to its ability to collect, investigate and thus spare from oblivion matters which, in one or another way, contributed to its survival. Unconscious or consciously this network of materials, systematically collected and preserved came to work as a support/expansion of the human memory, lately dramatically enlarged by methods and new equipment for rapid archival and dissemination of digital information. Keywords: Homo sapiens; evolution; memory; colectioning; survival.
