Abstract

Coccothrinax borhidiana es una palma endémica cubana En Peligro Crítico, exclusiva de Punta Guanos, Matanzas. Aunque hace años se desarrollan acciones de conservación con la especie, existe poca información sobre sus mecanismos de regeneración. Con el objetivo de contribuir a su propagación y conservación se estudiaron características morfofisiológicas de las semillas, clases de dormancia y requerimientos germinativos a partir de dos lotes frescos de un mismo año (enero y agosto). La germinación fue evaluada en laboratorio bajo dos condiciones de iluminación (luz/oscuridad y oscuridad constante) a temperatura fija de 25 ºC y alternas de 25/35 ºC y 25/40 ºC con agua destilada. Adicionalmente con el lote de agosto se evaluó la germinación a 25/35 ºC, con luz y ácido giberélico. Las semillas de ambos lotes que no germinaron a la luz con agua destilada fueron transferidas a oscuridad constante, a 25/35 ºC y con ácido giberélico. Las semillas recolectadas en agosto presentaron menor tamaño y contenido de humedad que las de enero, aunque en ambos casos este último rasgo fue > 20 %. Se identificó dormancia morfofisiológica en la especie. La luz inhibió la germinación, el ácido giberélico favoreció el crecimiento del embrión y 25/35 ºC fue la temperatura óptima. En seis meses las semillas de agosto duplicaron la germinación alcanzada por las semillas de enero en un año. En la resiembra, las semillas de ambos lotes alcanzaron > 65 % de germinación. Se discute el papel ecológico de los resultados obtenidos y se brindan recomendaciones para la siembra en vivero.
