The people of Kanyakumari district, where AyyaVaiKundar appeared, were enslaved to the king of Travancore. Men also enslaved women in the Kanyakumari district. The Ayya awakened the people by preaching reforms and charity through worship. As the lingayat religion originated in Karnataka, Ayya worshippers urged the government to convert themselves to the new religion, Ayya Vazhi. It is a form of worship that is different from Hinduism. Vaikundar's social awareness teachings such as giving food, living with the truth, joining with knowledgeable person, sacrificing life and respecting women developed goodwill among the people of the southern Tamil Nadu.
