Dragiša Polužanski and His Contribution to Serbian Librarianship after the Second World War

Abstract

The aim of this text is to present the work of Dragiša Polužanski (1908–1967), the first head of the Matica Srpska Library Center in Novi Sad. He spent 10 years in this position and is one of the most prominent persons in the field of librarianship, not only in the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina but also in the whole of Serbia. Together with the great names of Serbian interwar librarianship, including Milica Prodanović, Milica Vojinović, Ljudmila Mihailović, and Dušan Milačić, Dragiša Polužanski was one of the main carriers of library activities in the first 20 years after the end of the Second World War. In addition, his contribution to the work of the commissions of the Serbian Library Association, primarily the Vojvodina Section, as well as of the Alliance of the Yugoslav Library Associations is not negligible. He was also the first post-war director of the National and University Library of Bosnia and Herzegovina in Sarajevo and laid the foundations for the progress of this institution. His last function in librarianship was that of the manager of the Library of the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Novi Sad, which he performed from 1960 to 1967. The theoretical work of Dragiša Polužanski includes several dozen texts that he published in professional library magazines such as Knjižničar, which he established and edited, Bibliotekar, and Letopis Matice Srpske. Reading some of his articles, one can get a clear and precise overview of all the problems which accompanied the constitution of the library system in socialist Serbia – from accommodation capacities and library collections to human resource solutions. As an educated historian, he was able to point out the difficulties that still accompany the historical research of public librarianship in Serbia. He used articles found in periodicals and monographs to describe the work of libraries and pointed out the importance of the collected data, as well as the need for their analysis and presentation in order to place the data on individual institutions in the context of the general development of Serbian culture of a certain historical period.
