Luehea divaricata Martius 1826

Abstract

Luehea divaricata Martius (1826: 101). Type:— BRAZIL. São Paulo: “ Habitat inter sepes et in collius apricis prope Ytu et Pendamonhangaba ”, Martius s.n. (lectotype [as ‘holotype’], first-step designated by Cunha (1985: 29); second-step lectotype, designated here, M! [M0210165]; isolectotypes M! [M0210178]). In the protologue only Herbarium Munich (M) and Herbarium Zuccarini are mentioned (Martius 1826, Stafleu & Cowan 1976 –1988: 325). Cunha (1985) indicated holotype (M), but without having seen it or specifying its identification number. Consequently, this designation must be corrected as lectotype and as a first-step typification (Art. 9.17 of the ICN). Two specimens of Martius s.n. (L. divaricata) are in Herbarium M based on data found on the label. In accordance with Arts. 9.3 and 9.4 of the ICN, we herein designate specimen (M0210165) as a second-step lectotype by choosing the best-preserved specimen congruent with the protologue’s description. Another three specimens of Martius s.n. (M0210175, M0210179, M0210180) are also found in M; however, no evidence, including label data, indicates that they are duplicates of the lectotype herein designated. The exsiccate (M0210176) is only a reproduction of Figure 63 from Martius’ work. Based on Cunha (1985) and the present study, the application of the name L. divaricata is confirmed as an accepted species.
