Physical Chemistry Laboratory, Department of Applied Chemistry, Calcutta University Manuscript received 21 March 1978, accepted 30 May 1978 The nature of interaction products of an illitic soil clay mineral and soil humic compound has been investigated by X-ray diffraction studies. It appears that most of these humus compounds are held on the external surfaces, broken bonds and edges of clay.
