As of 24th February 2022, Russian forces occupy the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone (CEZ), cancelling the field study proposed in this draft document with immediate effect. It is with the deepest regret that we witness the unfolding events in Ukraine, and navigate the consequences for scientific research. We thank our colleagues, Mr. Sergiy Dubchak, and the SSE Ecocenter, for their support in previous expeditions to the CEZ, and lending their expertise and advice for this project. This is a draft document that had only been partially reviewed at the time of cancellation and was still subject to approval by all parties. However, the work done to prepare for this project may still be of value in the future, whether the LISA 4 Society project can find an alternative sampling location, or another project is able to go the CEZ at a later date. What is certain is that the legacy of Chornobyl remains relevant to this day, and open scientific research plays an important role in untangling that legacy.
