Abstract

La subtitulación es una modalidad de traducción audiovisual que consiste en un texto escrito (normalmente en la parte inferior de la pantalla) que proporciona un recuento del diálogo original de los hablantes, los elementos discursivos que aparecen en la imagen y la información incluida en la banda sonora, como canciones, voces en off, etc. Introducida por primera vez con la llegada del cine sonoro al final de la segunda década del siglo XX, la subtitulación es una adaptación de los intertítulos utilizados en el cine mudo (Kapsaskis 2019). Se trata de un texto escrito que proporciona un recuento del diálogo original de los hablantes, los elementos discursivos que aparecen en la imagen (cartas, insertos, inscripciones, etc.) y la información incluida en la banda sonora, como canciones, voces en off, etc. (Díaz Cintas & Remael 2008). Este capítulo incluye, en primer lugar, una descripción de las principales características del subtitulado y de sus limitaciones más comunes. Para evitar la consideración del subtitulado como una mera sucesión de reglas y directrices, los siguientes apartados se centran en el impacto que tienen los subtítulos en la experiencia audiovisual de los espectadores respecto a tres aspectos concretos: la velocidad de subtitulado, el ritmo visual y la ceguera por subtitulado. Por último, como solución potencial a algunas de las cuestiones analizadas en este capítulo, el último apartado se centra en la producción audiovisual accesible, un nuevo enfoque que tiene como objetivo integrar la traducción y/o la accesibilidad a los medios (en este caso, el subtitulado) en el proceso de producción cinematográfica mediante la colaboración entre el equipo creativo y los traductores para preservar la intención del filme original.
