Manuascript received 4 December 1984, accepted 8 June 1988 Experimental results on solvent sublation of hydrophobic refractory chlorinated compoun s of low aqueous solubility are used to determine the values of the coefficient �� which control the extent of mass transfer across the air-water Interface of the rising air bubbles in a solvent sublation column. For the various compounds studied the trend in �� values suggests that larger the value of �� the more hydrophobic the compound is and the more easily It is removed by solvent sublation. Mineral oil was found to be an extremely good organic 'solvent' (here 'solvent' refers to an immiscib e organic liquid Boating on top of the aqueous layer) for solvent sublation. The value of the adsorption parameter �� was observed to be extremely dependent on the rather imprecise value of Vo, the adsorption energy for these hydrophobic compounds at air-water interfaces.
