Abstract

Tracheliodes herinaceus (Gribodo, 1894) stat. rev. (Figs 1A, 1D, 1G, 2A, 2D, 2G, 3A, 3D, 3G, 4B, 4D, 4H, 4J, 5) Crabro (Blepharipus) herinaceus Gribodo, 1894: 23. Lectotype: ♂, Tunisia, Tunis (MSNG), designated by de Beaumont, 1950: 266. Fig. 5. Crabro (Tracheliodes) quinquenotatus var. khoudja Doumandji and Doumandji, 1988: 107-109. ♀ (holotype not designated): Algeria, Alger (depository not indicated). Not available: Article 45.6.3 of the Code. Synonymy. Crabro herinaceus Gribodo was synonymized with Crabro quinquenotatus Jurine by Kohl (1915: 325). De Beaumont (1950) designated its lectotype and stated that this taxon could be a valid subspecies. Later, a new Algerian variety of C. quinquenotatus, named khoudja, was described based on its coloration by Doumandji & Doumandji (1988). This description is imperfect (no holotype designated, no material examined listed and no depository indicated) and the International Code on Zoological Nomenclature does not recognize varieties described after 1960 as available names (Art. 45.6.3). Because T. herinaceus is the only species exhibiting the color patterns described for the khoudja variety and, because it is the only species occurring in Algeria, T. quinquenotatus var. khoudja can only refer to T. herinaceus. Diagnosis. The lateral teeth of the clypeus free margin are not distinctly wider than long, usually about 1.2 × as wide as long (Fig. 1A, 2A). The outer edge of the lateral teeth is elevated, higher than inner edge, so that the teeth seem more inclined toward the median tooth than in the other species (in which lateral teeth are more or less in the same plan as the median tooth). The clypeal process of T. herinaceus is diagnostic in female, with straight to sinuous side in the dorsal view (Fig. 1D). This process may be reduced in some small males so that the clypeus seems similar to that of T. quinquenotatus. The upper frons is finely and sparsely punctate, as in T. quinquenotatus (Fig. 4E). The vertex usually is longer than in the following species, often longer than three diameters of posterior ocellus while it hardly reaches three diameters of posterior ocellus in the other species. The characteristic punctation of the prepectus may be missing in small males. The yellow spots are more developed than in the other species of this group. Egg-yellow colored are: mandible, scape (usually entirely yellow while usually partly black in the other species), lower gena up to whole of gena, spot on the top of inner orbit up to whole of inner orbit, pronotal collar, tegula, scutellum, median spot on tergum I, a pair of wide lateral spots on tergum III and on tergum V (absent in some males), most of fore and mid legs (except bases of femora and most of coxa), hindtibia and hindtarsus. In the lightest specimens, the clypeus, fore and mid legs, metanotum and axilla are entirely yellow; the vertex, scutum, propodeum, mesepisternum and all terga are also partly yellow (small lateral spots on terga II, IV, and VI).
