This workshop was funded by the National Science Foundation, Grant ID 1838990. This goals and objectives of the workshop are meant to bring awareness to scientific societies supporting the natural sciences and adjacent sciences on how they can help meet the aspirations of open and FAIR data, request that natural science societies and adjacent sciences actively communicate with their members on the importance of open and FAIR data, share resources that are available to support better understanding that support intentional culture change. We had nearly 40 participants representing 18 societies attend the workshop. Additional conversations were had with participants that could not make it to the meeting increasing exposure to 25 societies. Participating societies provided updates on their progress in encouraging and requiring open and FAIR data sharing. This sharing brought an awareness of both common challenges and those that are more unique, but important in cross-discipline, transdisciplinary, or collaborative efforts. There was positive support to continue working together on the challenges around data and software sharing as a broad community. During our breakout session on the first day we challenged the participants with creating a five-year vision for data sharing considering three different aspects. This activity helped to establish a positive tone for the evening discussion at dinner and the work to come on the second day.
