Abstract

Liposcelis bostrychophila Badonnel Liposcelis bostrychophilus Badonnel, 1931: 250. The hitherto unknown male is described here from Haleakala National Park, Maui and Mauna Kea, Hawaii. The species has not been reported previously from Hawaii. Male color. Compound eyes black. Head reddish-brown with scattered purple subcuticular pigment. Appendages and well-sclerotized regions of abdomen pale reddish-brown. Each of abdominal terga 3–7 with a slender transverse band of medium brown along its anterior margin. Membranous regions of abdominal terga creamy white. Male general structural characters. Habitus Fig. 31. Five ommatidia in compound eye (n= 5). Sensilla r and s of P4 long and setiform. Lacinial tip (Fig. 27) with lateral and median cusps strongly splayed. Mesothoracic parapsidal regions indicated by a prominent line on each side marking a break in cuticular sculpture. Abdominal terga 1 and 2 with 4 transverse sclerotized bands separated by membrane. The anteriormost band in 3 regions well separated by membrane; the second slender, broken in middle, not reaching sides of tergum; the third wider with narrow break in middle; the fourth slightly slenderer than the third, with incomplete break in middle. Phallosome (Fig. 3) open anteriorly, i.e. the struts not fused anteriorly. See also section “A note on the phallosome of Liposcelis ”. Male sculpture of integument. Vertex throughout with areoles of moderate width, all bearing very distinct tubercles as in female (cf. Mockford, 1993, fig. 526). Mesonotum with numerous bare areoles in front of parapsidal lines, mostly with tubercles of size and density as those of vertex but not in areoles. Abdominal terga 1 and 2 with distinct transverse areoles bearing tubercles of same size and density as head and mesonotum and separated by lines of denser tubercles. Well sclerotized regions of rest of abdomen with transverse areoles, vague in some areas, bearing tubercles of same size and density as noted above. Membranous regions of abdominal terga vaguely tuberculate, without areoles. Male chaetotaxy. Vertex with sparse setae (~ 9µm) mostly shorter than half the distance between their bases. SI short (~ 13µm), little longer than any other seta of pronotum. Prosternum with 4 setae, 2 anteriors and 2 posteriors. SII shorter than SI. Mesosternum with 5 setae in anterior row (n= 4). Abdominal terga 3–8 each with anterior and posterior row of short setae on well sclerotized anterior region of tergum. Fused terga 9–10 with scattered short setae; Md and Mv 10 differentiated, about 4x length of surrounding setae. SE differentiated (~ 21 µm) about twice length of neighboring setae. Male measurements (N= 4 for all; means follow ranges in parentheses). BL= 779–837 (808); V= 190–206 (195); P4= 59–65 (62); FL= 175–190 (183); FW= 83–97 (90); T= 140–156 (150); t1= 50–55 (52); t2= 25–33 (30); t3= 35–42 (39). Material examined. HAL1, 4 females; HAV1, 1 female; HPL1, 1 male, 2 females; HPP1, 9 females; MKL1, 2 males, 3 females, 2 nymphs; MKL2, 1 male; MKL3, 1 male, 6 females, 5 nymphs; MPL1, 2 males.
