Department of Chemistry, M. L. V. Government College, Bhilwara-311 001 Manuscript received 3 June 1986, revised 19 November 1986, accepted 3 January 1987 Oxidation of L(-)β-phenylalanine by cerium(IV) sulphate In the presence of manganese(II) ions has been found to be first order in both, oxidant and L(-),β-phenylalanine concentrations. Various hypotheses for the mechanism of acid catalysis have been tested. The energy and entropy of activation have been calculated as 15.74 kcal mol-1 and -18.24 kcal mol-1 K-1, respectively. A tentative mechanism has been proposed in consisteot with the experimental data.
