Abstract

Tephritis afrostriata S. Korneyev, new species (Figs 6–16) Material: Holotype Ƥ: TAJIKISTAN: « Таджикистан, с-з Хамза, поле люцерны» [Fayzabad distr., “collective farm Hamza, alfalfa field”], 9–17.VIII.1982 (Isametdinov) (SIZK). Paratypes: 53, 2Ƥ, same label as in holotype, 9–17 VIII.1982; 13 reserve, 120 km NEE Dushanbe, 6–8.08.1985 Nesterov (SIZK); KAZAKHSTAN: 33, 1ƤƤ, Medeo, 4.VII.1984 (Dolin) (SIZK). Etymology. The species name is adjective, combined of Greek αφρός (foam) and Latin stria (linear mark), reflecting its banded wing pattern with numerous small hyaline spots. Diagnosis. Tephritis afrostriata can be readily differentiated from all Palaearctic species of the genus by the combination of its partly yellow, grey microtrichose preabdomen and shining yellow oviscape and grey wing pattern consisting of the apical crossband and two band-like grey areas (from pterostigma through crossveins r–m and dm-cu and from apex of vein R2+3 to middle of cell m), including smaller hyaline spots and separated from each other by widely confluent large hyaline spots, forming two hyaline intervals. A somewhat similar wing pattern is present in the North American Tephritis californica Doane 1899 and T. palmeri Jenkins 1989, but these species are otherwise very different (e.g., they have no apical band or spot on the wing) and non-related. Description. Male and female. Head yellow, length: height: width ratio 1: 1.1: 1.4. Frons as wide as long. Eye 1.4 times as high as long. First flagellomere of antenna 2.1 times as long as wide. Gena 0.5 times as high as length of first flagellomere. Ocellar, medial vertical, anterior orbital and frontal setae black; posterior orbital and lateral vertical white to yellowish white. Postocular and genal setulae white and setulae on distal part of palpus and on pedicel black. Thorax. Ground colour dark brown, densely grey microtrichose. Scutellum grey in the middle, yellow laterally and ventrolaterally, grey microtrichose. Setulae white and acuminate; posterior notopleural seta whitish and lanceolate; posterior anepisternal seta and anepimeral seta brown. Apical scutellar setae half as long as basal scutellar setae. Calypteres white, with whitish fringe; upper calypter conspicuously lobate, almost as long as wide, lower calypter narrow. Halter yellow. Legs. Entirely yellow. Wing (Fig. 7). hyaline with pale brownish grey pattern. Cells bc and c hyaline, except pale grey shadows at vein h and distal half (as per Fig. 7) of cell c. Pterostigma pale brown without hyaline spots, yellow in posterobasal and anterodistal corners. Cell r1 posterior to pterostigma brown; distal to R1 apex with two wide trapezoidal hyaline spots separated by dark interval 0.3 times as wide as distal spot; apex of r1 with small additional hyaline spot. Cell r2+3 hyaline at base, with brownish-grey area posterior to pterostigma, with small round hyaline spots: one at r–m level 0.5–0.7 times as wide as cell and 2–3 dots basal to it; two large hyaline spots distal to r–m separated by dark interval, half as wide as distant hyaline spot; proximal spot ca. 4 times as wide as distal spot, widely confluent with hyaline spots in cells r1 and r4+5; preapical dark area wide, with hyaline spot posterior to R2+3 apex, and with 5–9 smaller hyaline or grey dots; hyaline spot at r2+3 apex subrectangular. Cell br hyaline at base, brownish-grey posterior to pterostigma, with large hyaline spot, often confluent with basal hyaline area, 1–2 smaller hyaline spots and dots aligned to r–m. Crossvein r–m with two to three pairs of small hyaline spots sometimes fused to form 2 elongate spots. Cell r4+5 at dm-cu level with large trapezoid hyaline spot, as wide as cell, widely confluent with hyaline spots in cells r4+5 and m and narrowly isolated from or partly confluent with two large round spots (or one 8- shaped spot) distal to it; subapical brown area with 3–10 greyish or small hyaline spots and joined to apical crossband by narrow grey “peduncle” separating 2 rounded hyaline preapical spots. Cell m with 4–6 hyaline spots, of them, basalmost one large, of various shape, widely confluent with basal hyaline spot in cell r4+5; preapical hyaline spots in r2+3 and r4+5 are connected; hyaline spots in dark interval of variable shape and size, usually partly merged. Cell dm hyaline at base, with 4–6 large, partly confluent hyaline spots separated by narrow grey intervals; apical portion greyish brown, with 1–4 hyaline spots or dots of variable size and shape. Cell cu with large, partly confluent hyaline spots separated by narrow grey areas either forming reticulate structure in anterior half or partly isolated in anterior and posterior halves. Anal cell with 3–4 pale grey bars. Anal lobe mostly hyaline, with inconspicuous pale grey spots. Abdomen. (Fig. 11) Brown in ground colour, sometimes with narrow yellow margins, densely grey microtrichose. Abdominal tergites white setulose and setose, marginal setae on tergite 5 of male and 6 of female brown. Sternites yellowish-brown, white setose and setulose, moderately wide, male sternite 5 posteriorly incised. Female sternite 6 with anteromedial apodeme. Abdominal pleura matt grey. Terminalia. Male. Epandrium (Figs 9–10) shape as in other Tephritis species. Phallus without spines, glans (Fig. 8) moderately short, mostly membranous. Ejaculatory apodeme as in Fig. 12. Female. Oviscape yellow, as long as 3 last abdominal tergites combined, widely white setulose ventrally and anterolateral corners of dorsal side, black setulose and setose dorsomedially and posteriorly. Eversible membrane with two pairs of taeniae 0.3 times as long as membrane itself; membrane with small monodentate scales, slightly large medioventrally. (Fig. 15). Aculeus moderately short, 1.1 mm long, 4.6 times as long as wide, with acute apex (Figs 13–14). Two short, papillose spermathecae, 4.5–5.2 times as long as wide. (Fig. 16). Measurements. WL = 4.2 mm (3), 4.6 mm (Ƥ); CL = 1.1 mm. AL = 1.1 mm. BL = 3.7–4.0 mm (3), 4.5–5.2 mm (Ƥ). Host plants. Unknown.
