Pilostenaspis copei Eya, sp. nov.

Abstract

Pilostenaspis copei, Eya, sp. nov. (Figs. 152–153) Description. Female: Length, 24 mm. Form moderate size; integument black, dorsal surface very dark, metallic green; tubercles on each side of pronotum, lateral margin of elytra, and four transverse maculae on elytra (a pair at 1/3 and another at ¾ length), orange or reddish-orange; surface densely, coarsely punctate, clothed with a mixture of long and short erect pale hairs. Head with front short, deeply impressed transversely, each side with deep pit; palpi with apical segments of labial and maxillary pair truncate at apex, impressed dorsally; antennal tubercles broad, slightly elevated, apices acute; antennae 11-segmented, short, robust, reaching ½ length of elytra, segments 3rd–11th laterally carinate, 3rd segment subequal to 1st, 4th and 5th subequal and shorter than 3rd, 6th and 7th subequal and shorter than 5th, 8th–10th successively shorter than 7th, 11th longer than 10th and subequal to 8th, appendicuate at apical ¼. Pronotum broader than long (1.66 x length), lateral angle on posterior half acute; disc very coarsely, confluently punctate, moderately clothed with long, fine, erect hairs intermixed with shorter hairs; prosternum with pubescence like that of pronotum except denser; metasternum densely clothed with pale, erect pubescence intermixed with appressed pubescence on sides. Elytra 2.1 times longer than broad, very coarsely, densely, confluently punctate, punctures only slightly smaller apically, disc moderately clothed with erect pubescence, apices rounded, sutural angle dentiform. Legs with bases of trochanter yellowish. Abdomen finely punctate, clothed with pale, erect pubescence, 5th sternite broadly rounded to apex. Male: Unknown. Etymology. Named after an avid collector of Cerambycidae, Mr. James S. Cope for making this unique specimen available for examination. Type. Holotype, female, Mexico: Oaxaca, road to Microondas Ocotepec, 6 km S Matalán, N16 49’ 32”, W96 21’ 42”, 6800 ft gps 14 Oct 2006, C.L. Bellamy, CLB 987 on misc. flower or foliage. Holotype deposited in JCEC per request of J.S. Cope. Note. This species can easily be recognized by its larger size and the four red maculae on the elytra, a pair which transverse at 1/3 length and another at ¾ length from the base. The antennae of the female are also more robust and shorter than the other two species, reaching ½ length of elytra.
