Philoscirtus cordipennis Karsch 1896

Abstract

Philoscirtus cordipennis Karsch, 1896 Examined material. 2 males, 3 females, Tanzania, East Usambara Mountains, Sigi nr. Amani, April 1966, coll N. Jago, depository: BMNH. Re-description. Male. General coloration. Uniformly green with some brown to black markings at posterior end of tegmina (Fig. 3 C) and black spots at posterior end medially on tergites 6–7. Head and antennae. Antenna very long, 11 cm and thus about 3–4 times as long as body length. La Baume (1911) records a male with 13 cm long antennae collected at Amani by Vosseler. Thorax. Pronotum up-curved at posterior margin, very rugose (Fig. 3 A, C). Fore femora armed with 3–5 inner and 0–1 outer stout short spines, marked brown to black at posterior outer side; posterior ends of femora with reddish pair of spurs. Legs. All femora slightly laterally compressed. Mid femora with 1–2 stout spines at posterior part, also with a pair of stout spurs. Hind femora with numerous stout and acute brown spines and a pair of stout spurs at lunules. Abdomen. Cerci green, short and rather stout, slightly inwardly curved. Subgenital plate elongated with slender middle part and expanded posterior part. Posterior part brown, triangularly incised, thus forming a fork with pointed tips (Fig. 3 E). With minute styli. Female. Larger than males. Antenna of one measured specimen 13.5 cm long. Tegmina small rounded and from each other separated lobes, reaching to abdominal tergite 2. Ovipositor stout at base, about half as long as body size, almost straight. Subgenital plate heart-shaped with circlic incision at posterior point. Measurements, male.— (mm) (N = 2). Body length: 25–28. Length of pronotum: 5–6. Length of visible part of elytra: 5. Length of hind femur: 25–33. Measurements, female.— (mm) (N = 3). Body length: 33–42. Length of pronotum: 7. Length of visible part of elytra: 3–4. Length of hind femur: 35–39. Ovipositor length: 22–28. Distribution. Tanzania, East Usambara Mountains and coast around Tanga (Karsch 1896, La Baume 1911).
