Eumenes Latreille 1802: 360. Type species Vespa coarctata Linnaeus, 1758], by subsequent monotypy of Latreille 1810: 438. In Hermes et al. (2014) the genus Eumenes is sister-group of a clade including Omicroides Giordani Soika, Ischnogasteroides Magretti, Oreumenes Bequaert, Oreumenoides Giordani Soika, Afreumenes Bequaert, Zeta de Saussure, Phimenes Giordani Soika, Katamenes Meade-Waldo and Delta de Saussure. The genus shares the following characteristic with the other genera: metanotum with longitudinal carina adjacent to the disc, propodeum with transverse striae on the posterior surface, T2 with lateral margins parallel basally in ventral view, and the spine of the parameres with dense patch of setae. The below combination of characteristics are the diagnosis of the genus Eumenes based on the cladogram in Hermes et al. (2014): the apex of the labrum truncate, F11 of male antenna reaching half of F8, and the dorsal margin of the lamina of the cuspis in male genitalia with projection.
