Bei der Veröffentlichung von Forschungsdaten nutzt OstData ein zweistelliges Versionierungsschema nach dem Muster „major.minor“ (z. B. Version 1.3). Umfangreiche Änderungen an Forschungsdaten nach der Publikation haben eine Zählung an der Stelle „major“ zur Folge, geringfügige Änderungen an der Stelle „minor“. Erstveröffentlichungen tragen in OstData die Versionsbezeichnung 1.0.
