Memorias negadas: la Campaña al Desierto en Bahía Blanca, Argentina

Abstract

In the history of Bahía Blanca (Argentina), the "Campaign to the Desert" represented a conjunctural process. However, the hegemonic actors of the city have presented it as a founding myth, associated with the beginning of the "modernization" of the region and its "civilizing" principles. In mid-2021the municipality decided to launch an online survey that was open to the community to change the name of the park that was named after the “Campaign to the Desert”. Against all odds, the alternative name that emerged with the greatest force was “Julio A. Roca”. In this paper, we propose to problematize this situation based on the analysis of the responses on social networks and publications in the media, where the process of indigenous genocide was claimed and where these societies and their memories were denied and made invisible. As a counterpoint, we recover some Mapuche stories that recall the same process from their own subjectivities and stories. The work combines different qualitative research strategies such as the analysis of journalistic publications and articles, and the development of interviews and oral history workshops.
