Responsabilidad Social Empresarial y desarrollo sostenible: reflexiones desde la ética aplicada

Abstract

El artículo explora la relación existente entre la Responsabilidad Social Empresarial y la propuesta para el desarrollo sostenible. En virtud de esto, el artículo se centra en tres aspectos: 1) La conceptualización teórica del desarrollo sostenible, que surge de las demandas de una sociedad azotada por el deterioro medioambiental, que reclamaba acciones contundentes para frenar los efectos adversos de la industrialización. En respuesta a ello, la World Conservation Unión, el Informe Brundtland (CMMAD, 1987), la Agenda 21 (Cumbre de la Tierra en Río de Janeiro, Brasil en 1992), y la Cumbre Mundial en Johannesburgo en 2002, ayudaron a perfilar la definición de desarrollo sostenible manejada hasta el momento. 2) La propuesta para la Responsabilidad Social Empresarial, que tiene claros antecedentes en el siglo XIX, pero no es hasta el siglo XX, a la par de los avances del desarrollo sostenible, que entra en la escena académica y gerencial, postulando una nueva visión de la empresa, con pertinencia social, adecuándose a las demandas de una sociedad más consciente, sin perder de vista la necesidad de producción y crecimiento sustentable. 3) La Responsabilidad Social Empresarial en interrelación con los objetivos del desarrollo sostenible, representando la oportunidad de materializar la responsabilidad de las empresas con el medioambiente y la colectividad. Se concluye en la importancia de la toma de conciencia con respecto a la globalización y sus efectos adversos sobre la vida en el planeta, así como la necesidad de las empresas de actuar responsablemente frente a este fenómeno.
