Macrostemum hyalinum

Abstract

Taxonomy of Macrostemum hyalinum (Pictet 1836) Macrostemum hyalinum is an important and unclear species of the genus for many reasons. It is one of the first Trichoptera species described from the Neotropical region and, ironically, the taxonomic problems start in the original description. According to Pictet (1836), the type locality for this species is “Indes orientales” [East Indies], but other authors argued that the species is Brazilian (Burmeister 1839; Ulmer 1905b, 1907, 1913). França et al. (2013) listed the distribution of M. hyalinum as South American. Kolenati (1859) examined M. hyalinum in order to establish the genus Macrostemum. The genus was proposed based on the mistaken observation of the absence of a pair of small apical spurs on each foretibia. The genus was established without a type species designation (Kolenati 1859). In 1957, Ulmer designated M. hyalinum as the type species of the genus and Hollier (2007) confirmed that the type series has been lost.

Published as part of França, Diogo & Paprocki, Henrique, 2019, The neotype of Macrostemum hyalinum (Pictet 1836) (Trichoptera: Hydropsychidae) and a key to males of Neotropical species of this genus, pp. 175-181 in Zootaxa 4559 (1) on page 176, DOI: 10.11646/zootaxa.4559.1.8, http://zenodo.org/record/2626805
