Proper and reproducible substrate preparation plays a crucial role for the success of the respective surface coating techniques. After optimizing the procedure for copper substrates in ARIES, the focus is shifted to niobium substrates in I.FAST. Two techniques have been developed, a plasma enhanced polishing method at INFN Legnaro and a metallographical polishing at IJCLEab/CEA. Both have been applied to QPR samples. The CEA sample was baseline-tested in the HZB-QPR and found to be of sufficient quality.
