Os "raios N" de René Blondlot: uma anomalia na história da física

Abstract

Em 1903 o físico francês René Blondlot anunciou a descoberta de uma nova radiação invisível penetrante, que chamou de "raios N". Outros pesquisadores confirmaram a existência desses raios e publicaram artigos sobre o assunto. Vários cientistas, no entanto, obtiveram resultados negativos. No final de 1904 a maior parte da comunidade científica concluiu que a nova radiação não existia. Atualmente costuma-se considerar que Blondlot cometeu falhas graves e que os raios N eram uma ilusão. Costuma-se descrever os resultados de Blondlot como mero efeito de erros experimentais e auto-sugestão. No entanto, esse cientista obteve resultados fotográficos que apoiavam fortemente a existência dos raios N. As pesquisas de Blondlot pareciam bastante cuidadosas. No entanto, alguns outros pesquisadores (como Jean Becquerel) publicaram trabalhos problemáticos sobre o assunto. Foi após uma campanha crítica promovida por Henri Piéron e pela Revue Scientifique que a comunidade se posicionou contra a existência dessa radiação, mas sem esclarecer todos os aspectos científicos desse estranho episódio da história da física. Além de um estudo histórico sobre os "raios N", este livro contém uma tradução comentada de todos os trabalhos fundamentais e da correspondência de René Blondlot com Poincaré sobre o assunto.
