En Ecuador la leishmaniasis constituye un problema de salud pública, debido a su amplia distribución en áreas rurales de las regiones Costa, Sierra y Oriente, siendo así una de las principales causas de morbilidad. El objetivo de la presente investigación está dirigida a identificar el nivel de conocimiento sobre la leishmaniasis en cantones de la Provincia de Manabí. El estudio es de tipo descriptivo, prospectivo y transversal. Para ello se seleccionó una muestra al azar de 369 residentes de los cantones Jipijapa, Montecristi y Puerto López de la Provincia de Manabí. Se aplicó un cuestionario validado para obtener las características sociodemográficas y nivel de conocimiento sobre enfermedad y medidas preventivas. Con respecto a la definición de la enfermedad, la población tuvo un deficiente conocimiento, así como desconocimiento del vector transmisor. Se concluye que la población tiene poco conocimiento sobre la enfermedad, lo que pudiera influir en la transmisión de leishmaniasis en la zona.
