ABSTRACT The objective of the present study was to determine the aedic indices and establish the level of risk for the transmission of dengue, chikungunya and zika in Barrio Ajuro, Heres municipality, Bolvar state, Venezuelan Guayana. In August 2016, we examined all possible breeding sites for Aedes aegypti found in the surroundings of the homes of said community. A total of 160 (87.4%) of the 183 houses of community were evaluated. In 154 (96.3%) of these houses, containers capable of containing water were found (possible breeding sites for A. aegypti). An estimate of 11,150 containers capable of acting as hatcheries were found, of which 3,760 contained water. A total of 88 houses with at least one container with A. aegypti larvae and/or pupae were found, with a total of 142 positive recipients. A large number and variety of containers served as hatcheries but there was a preference (p < 0.05) for abandoned rubbers tires. A total of 6,756 immature stages of Culicidae were captured (6,289 larvae and 467 pupae), of which 6,695 were identified as belonging to the genus Aedes (6,684 A. aegypti and 11 A. albopictus) and 61 to Culex. The dwelling index was 55%, containers index 3.8% and the Breteau index was 88.8%. In conclusion, considering the result of the calculated aedic indices, the community is at high risk for the transmission of dengue and by extension of chikungunya and zika viruses.
