Plagas en edificios de valor patrimonial: termitas en la Casa Natal de Sarmiento (San Juan, Argentina)

Abstract

El Edificio Casa Natal de Sarmiento, ubicado en la capital de la provincia de San Juan (Argentina), es uno de los pocos exponentes de arquitectura colonial que quedan en pie en dicha ciudad. Durante un trabajo de relevamiento de sus materiales y características constructivas originales se detectó que algunas carpinterías históricas y maderas de la estructura de soporte del techo se hallan atacadas por termitas. Dado que la Casa ha sido periódicamente objeto de fumigaciones destinadas a controlar su accionar, se estimó que su proliferación actual podía deberse a la falta de una identificación específica de los agentes causantes, lo que habría impedido la implementación de las estrategias adecuadas para dicho propósito. Una primera colecta de la entomofauna presente en el edificio reveló que se trataba de individuos del género Amitermes sp.; algunas especies de este grupo construyen nidos subterráneos y, a menos que éstos sean fumigados también, las acciones de control llevadas a cabo resultan poco efectivas. La presente nota buscar dar cuenta de la importancia de la correcta determinación entomológica como herramienta para el diseño de programas que minimicen el accionar de insectos causantes de severos daños a edificios de valor patrimonial.
