Abstract

Sundaramakalingam Temple is located on the Sathuragiri Hills near the Thiruvilliputhur Circle in the Western Ghats. The temple is self-contained. There is a hilly road to reach the temple, which is located at a distance of 8 km from the foothills. The natural setting of the mountains is breathtaking. It is also rich in medicinal leaves, bark and seeds. The architecture of the temple and its elements are described in detail in the scriptures and sculptures found in the temple. The temple building has six elements namely Feet, body, skin, neck, head, hair. The area of the temple walls is beautifully painted with portraits of deities. Therefore, Sathuragiri Sundaramakalinga Swami continues to bless the devotees and the devotees pay homage to the Swami even today. This article covers the history, structure, sanctum sanctorum of the Sundara Mahalingam temple, the paintings in it, the rituals of the devotees and the rituals are explored in detail.
