Abstract

Matelea balansae Morillo & Fontella, spec. nova (Fig. 1). Holotypus: PARAGUAY. Caaguazú: “Dans les forêts”, XI.1874, Balansa, B. 1795 (P). Species forma et dimensionibus foliorum, corolla diametro maiore cum Matelea hispida (Hook. & Arn.) Bacigalupo optime congruens, a qua differt ramis et foliis indumento minute puberulo-glanduloso, sepalis minoribus (3-3.2 mm long.), petalis brevioribus (5.1-5.3 mm long.), coronae lobulis bifidis (non annularibus) etiam pollinis leviter adscendentibus (non horizontalibus) brevioribus (0.45 mm long.). Trepadora de tallos volubles; ramas 1-1.5 mm de grosor, pubérulas, con tricomas glandulares diminutos. Hojas: opuestas, pecioladas, con 3 coléteres digitiformes en la base de la haz; pecíolos escasamente pilosos y diminutamente glandular-pubérulos, 0.5-2 cm largo; láminas oblongo-lanceoladas, 4.8-10 cm largo, 1.5-3.7 cm ancho, angostamente subcordadas en la base, acuminadas en el ápice, glabrescentes en la haz excepto densamente pilosas en la base, nervio medio densa- y diminutamente pubérulo, envés piloso, 9-10 pares de nervios laterales. Inflorescencias: parciales cimosas, paucifloras (3-4-floras); pedúnculo 5-9 mm largo. Flores: pediceladas, con pedicelos 6-12 mm largo; lóbulos del cáliz ovado-oblongos, 3-3.2 mm largo, 1.3- 1.5 mm ancho, acuminados, esparcidamente pilosos en la cara abaxial, glabros en la cara adaxial, un coléter en cada axila; corola rotácea, 15-16 mm diámetro, lóbulos anchamente ovados, 5.1-5.3 mm largo, 5.2-5.4 mm ancho, emarginados en el ápice, notablemente nervado-reticulados, glabros en la cara adaxial, cortamente pilosos y rugosos en la cara abaxial; corona carnosa, anular y 5-lobulada, lóbulos aparentemente erectos, bífidos. Ginostegio: subsésil, anteras dorsalmente bilobadas, 0.9-1 mm ancho; retináculo obtusamente sagitado, 0.18- 0.19 mm largo, 0.17-0.18 mm ancho; caudículas hialinas, ca. 0.25 mm largo; polinios levemente ascendientes, convexos en la cara externa, internamente cóncavos, ca. 0.45 mm largo, 0.37 mm ancho; cabeza estilar pentagonal, ligeramente cóncava, aproximadamente 1 mm diámetro. Fruto: no visto. Las descripciones e ilustraciones hechas por MEYER (1944) y MEYER & BACIGALUPO (1979) permiten indicar que dentro de las especies del cono sur con mayor similitud morfológica con M. balansae, se encuentra M. hispida (Hook. & Arn.) Bacigalupo. M. hispida se asemeja a la nueva especie en la forma y dimensión de las hojas, en las inflorescencias paucifloras (3-4-floras), y en las corolas mayores de 10 mm diámetro. Se diferencia claramente de ella por tener pubescencia con tricomas largos (1.5 mm) en tallos y envés foliar (en lugar de diminutamente glandular-pubescentes), lóbulos del cáliz mucho mayores, segmentos de la corona con margen entero (no bífido) y polinios horizontales (en lugar de levemente ascendientes) 0.7-0.8 mm largo (en lugar de 0.45 mm largo).
