Schiller y Goethe mantuvieron una estrecha amistad que les permitió tratar cuestiones antropológicas, literarias y estéticas. Schiller (lector de Kant) estaba vertido hacia lo interior y Goethe (investigador natural) hacia la exterioridad. Otra posible diferencia está en sus visiones de lo inevitable. En Schiller imperaría el modelo Antígona (lo fatal se deriva de conflictos políticos objetivos). En Goethe tendría vigencia el modelo Edipo (lo fatal es achacable a los designios del destino). Ello hizo que en las tragedias de Schiller predominaran las acciones y en las de Goethe los caracteres.
