Metatrichia bulbosa

Authors: Ale-Rocha, Rosaly; Limeira-De-Oliveira, Francisco;
Abstract

Metatrichia bulbosa (Osten Saken) (Figs 10–12, 19–20) Scenopinus bulbosus Osten Sacken, 1877: 275. Diagnosis. Thorax and abdomen dark brown to black (Fig. 10), apex of the abdomen, in females, eventually slightly paler; postpronotal lobe black with ventral margin yellow; scutum covered with scale-like, yellowish white, dropshaped setae, almost evenly distributed, some setae can be rather more concentrated, forming a narrow dorsocentral stripe (Fig. 12). Flagellum dark brown (Fig. 11). Legs brown to black with tibiae and tarsomere 5 pale brown, remaining tarsomeres yellow with apical brown ring. Wing hyaline or with costal cell brownish; knob of halter pale yellow to brown. Abdomen black. Tergites with scale-like setae only on lateral margins, short slender setae dorsally and ventrally. Terminalia (Figs 19–20): epandrial lamellae partially covering gonocoxites ventrally; gonocoxite large, rather triangular, with short protuberance on posterior margin in ventral view; hypandrium in two long and robust medially directed processes; gonostylus somewhat horseshoe-shaped, with apices of the anterior and posterior processes rounded and directed medially; distiphallus long, deeply bifurcate, arms divergent; ventral apodeme short and broadly extended laterally; ejaculatory apodeme large, spatulate. Comments. M. bulbosa was previously registered in the United States and Northern Mexico. It is being registered for the first time for South America, in Brazil. Although the specimens studied show small variations in the color of the knob, legs, and wing, they coincide with the species of M. bulbosa in the morphology of terminalia (Personal communication by Shaun Winterton who kindly compared the photos and drawings of the Amazonian specimens with the identified material deposited at the CSCA). Examinated material. Brasil (PI) (Piauí), Guaribas, Parque Nacional Serra das Confusões, Andorinha, 515 m, 09°08’27.8”S – 43°33’42.1”W, Armadilha suspensa, 10–2.vii.2014, J.A Rafael, F. Limeira-de-Oliveira, T. L. Rocha & G.A. Reis, cols. (1♂ CZMA); 01–10.vi.2014 (1♂, INPA); 15–31.vii.2013, J.A Rafael, F. Limeira-de-Oliveira & T. T. A. Silva (1♂, CZMA).
